13:35 Lucena – 17:30 Teruel

Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) continues her strong spring in the Vuelta Femenina, the Tour of Spain for women. In Teruel she was clearly faster than her compatriot Charlotte Kool.

The woman of the day was Mireia Benito. The Spaniard from AG Insurance was alone in the attack during the entire stage.

An interesting sixsome briefly escaped with European champion Mischa Bredewold, but that adventure was short-lived. So all the spotlights were focused on Benito.

There was some action in the peloton on the Alto Fuente de Rubielos, the only categorized slope of the day. The pace was not very fast, but women like Charlotte Kool and Alison Jackson got into trouble.

The fast women didn’t have to panic. No one continued after the climb, so everyone returned. Mireia Benito took advantage and extended her lead to more than 5 minutes.

The undulating course was barely used to make the race difficult. Grace Brown and Demi Vollering stuck their heads to the window, without much effect.

Cabbage is short

Towards the finish point Teruel the wind was increasing and it was also in the lead. It became an ordeal for Benito, who slowly but surely returned to the peloton.

The Spaniard was picked up 7 kilometers from the finish. The sprint preparation could begin.

This was somewhat disrupted by a fall in the last 3 kilometers. Only 30 riders crossed the line, but all the favorites were there.

Marianne Vos was no match in the sprint. The Dutch from Visma – Lease a Bike, which did a lot of work along the way, was faster than Charlotte Kool and Olivia Baril.

For Vos it is her 252nd victory ever on the road. Striking: she does this exactly 18 years after her very first UCI victory in the Czech Republic.

The leader’s jersey is just for Blanka Vas. With the 10 bonus seconds, Vos is one second short of also taking the red.

Vos: “Beautiful to finish it off”

Marianne Vos: “Of course I am very satisfied. Yesterday the entire team had already worked hard, but then we had bad luck in the final. Today we went all-in again. It is wonderful that I can finish it.”

There were again a number of falls along the way. “In the initial phase it was very dangerous with those wet roads. There were a lot of falls, I hope everyone is okay. There were also falls in the final, but I didn’t see anything of that. Unfortunately, falls are part of the race, It’s not fun.”

Phase by phase

Blanka Vas retains the red leader’s jersey. Marianne Vos will come within one second, but Vas remains the leader thanks to the bonus seconds along the way.

Marianne Vos wins easily!

The Dutch one hits the target. She leaves the competition far behind. Amber Kraak tried to surprise with a late exit, but she couldn’t get away. There was no real sprint preparation. In the end, Marianne Vos came out strong. Cabbage was well positioned, but had no juice in its legs.

Charlotte Kool’s team seems to have the best timing. They still have to come forward.

What can Lippert do?

When entering the penultimate kilometer, Movistar comes to the fore. It is with two servants for Liane Lippert. What can the German champion do in her first race?

Just like yesterday there is a fall in the last 3 kilometers. Thalita de Jong falls first. It happens around spot 30. Many have stopped.

Another 3 kilometers. The finish line is in sight. There are few sprint trains to be seen at the head of the peloton.

There are few technical moments in the final. The last real bend is about 2 kilometers from the finish. Near the red rag, the peloton still has to go through a roundabout.

SD Worx is at the front of the peloton with Blanka Vas’ red jersey. The Hungarian has fast legs, but there is also Barbara Guarischi in the team.

Cabbage against Fox?

Charlotte Kool can sprint for victory today, just like Marianne Vos. On paper they are the fastest in this peloton. Alison Jackson won yesterday, but can she confirm? Others to watch include Barbara Guarischi, Vittoria Guazzini, Georgia Baker and Maggie Coles-Lyster.

Benito grabbed

Mireia Benito’s solo has ended. After about 120 kilometers into the attack, she sees the rest of the peloton again. Her effort will not result in a victory, but it will undoubtedly result in the white fighting spirit jersey.

Teruel

Teruel has been a finishing place in the Tour of Spain for men 4 times, never for women. Of those 4 times, a Belgian won three times. These were Freddy Maertens (1977), Eric Vanderaerden (1983) and Frank Vandenbroucke (1999).

Benito has no chance. There are few bends so the peloton sees her driving for a while. Her story is almost written. The peloton is already within half a minute.

EF Education – Cannondale moves to the front row of the peloton. Alison Jackson was the fastest yesterday after a chaotic final. The question is what she can do against Kool and Vos.

Final tragedy

Now the wind really seems to be heading. The kilometers pass slowly. They will finish after 5:30 PM.

Another 20 kilometers

Four riders from Visma – Lease a Bike occupy the first positions. Leader Marianne Vos is hiding in the peloton. Benito loses some more of her feathers and still has 1’15” left.

DSM company PostNL is completely aloof at the head of the pack. However, with Charlotte Kool they may have the fastest of the pack in their ranks. She survived the altitude meters today.

Natalie Grinczer in ambulance

Roland has to continue without Natalie Grinczer. It was the British rider who stayed down for a long time after the crash. She is taken to hospital by ambulance.

New team leader Stijn Steels encourages Mireia Benito. That will probably be in vain, because her lead continues to shrink: 1’45”.
