A surprising managerial change is looming in the Bundesliga. According to media reports, Wolfsburg’s Marcel Schäfer is moving to his next opponent RB Leipzig. VfL apparently reacts with an immediate separation.

According to media reports, sports director Marcel Schäfer from VfL Wolfsburg is about to move to Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig. “Bild”, “Kicker” and “Wolfsburger Nachrichten” reported this unanimously on Wednesday, just three days before the direct Bundesliga duel between the two clubs (Saturday, 3:30 p.m./Sky). There is no official confirmation of this.

According to “Bild”, Wolfsburg will now immediately part ways with the 39-year-old, who played for VfL from 2007 to 2017. In 2018, Schäfer returned as sports director, and on February 1, 2023, Schäfer was promoted to managing director, succeeding Jörg Schmadtke. Since then things have continued to go downhill. The ex-professional was wrong with Schäfer’s decision to install Niko Kovac as Florian Kohfeldt’s successor.

Promotion for Marcel Schäfer

The corresponding position has no longer been filled at Leipzig since the separation from Max Eberl in September 2023. Rouven Schröder is employed by RB as sports director.

Despite all his ties to VfL, a move to Leipzig would be a sporting advancement for the former national player Schäfer. RB is in a Champions League place. The Wolfsburg team have not yet been able to end their sporting crisis even after the coaching change from Niko Kovac to Ralph Hasenhüttl.

With regard to Schäfer’s successor, the commitment of sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz was perhaps a transfer with foresight. The ex-professional previously worked as sports director at Bundesliga club VfL Bochum, is quite familiar with this management position and could be an internal solution, at least in the short term.
