Madagascar Faces Uncertainty as African Judo Championships Approach

Only 10 days before the closing of registrations for the next African Championships, Madagascar has not yet confirmed its participation, unlike 26 other nations which have already raised their flag for the competition scheduled for April 24 to 27 in Cairo, the vibrant Egyptian capital.

The last national championships saw the judokas of the national selection confirm their supremacy, a performance which propelled them to the forefront during the recent African Games. These exceptional athletes, led by reigning African champion Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy, are ready to proudly defend the Malagasy colors and aim for the podium.
Madagascar, recognized as a major force in judo on the African continent, must mark its presence at this continental meeting, just like the host country and neighboring nations. The Malagasy judo federation has already prepared a list of athletes, but the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MJS) is the guarantor of financial support essential to the realization of their noble mission. However, without formal approval from the ministry, the federation is unable to finalize the selection. The number of judokas will inevitably depend on the allocated budget.

Olympic qualifying
It is important to remember that during the last African championships, Madagascar fielded 6 brave fighters and distinguished itself by ranking 7th in the gold medal table. Drawing on their experience acquired during high-level competitions such as the Island Games, the Francophonie Games, and the African Games, Malagasy judokas are more determined than ever to surpass themselves.
Beyond the African competition, it is the prospect of Olympic qualifications which looms on the horizon. For athletes aspiring to shine at the Olympic Games, every fight counts. Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy, for example, must redouble her efforts to climb the Olympic rankings after a slight drop in her rating, going from 5/12 to 4/12 in the continental quota.
For Malagasy judokas, the African championships represent an opportunity to glean the points necessary to register or progress in the world rankings. Each hold, each ippon, each victory brings them a little closer to their Olympic dream.
