Lothar Matthäus Questions Uli Hoeneß’ Role at FC Bayern

After the sharp style criticism from Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, Lothar Matthäus took the side of coach Thomas Tuchel on Saturday. Now the record national player has followed up and fundamentally questioned the role of the club patriarch at FC Bayern.

“Unfortunately, Uli Hoeneß once again missed the mark with his statements about Thomas Tuchel,” wrote the 63-year-old in his column for “Sky”.

Hoeneß denied Tuchel’s desire to develop talent at a “FAZ” conference on Friday and claimed that the head coach always wanted to solve problems through transfers. The outgoing trainer struck back on Saturday before the game against Eintracht Frankfurt (2-1) and called the allegations “baseless”.

For Matthew it is less about the content of the criticism. The former midfielder is fundamentally critical of the public reckoning.

The “worst moment” for FC Bayern

“It’s not the first time that [Uli Hoeneß, Anm. d. Red] brought things to the outside world. “You can’t stop Uli, he doesn’t think in moments like this,” denounced Matthäus. “I’m totally on Tuchel’s side if he feels insulted in his honor as a coach.”

The 1990 world champion also put forward the theory that Hoeneß no longer knew enough about the club’s processes to make such statements. Maybe someone was even whispering to him “things that don’t correspond to reality,” Matthäus added.

At FC Bayern you now have to ask yourself whether you want to allow the long-time manager to continue to play his current role. “I don’t mean that in a negative way against Uli, but you have to protect him from himself every now and then, because with something like that he not only harms FC Bayern, but also himself,” continued Matthäus.

The timing of the appearance just days before the important Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and in the middle of an already complicated search for a coach is particularly precarious. “Such statements never come at a good moment, but for the overall Bayern Munich project it is certainly the worst possible moment,” said Matthäus.
