Liverpool were held 2-2 by their historic rival Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford and gave up first place to Arsenal seven days before the end of the English championship. The Reds fall to second place due to a less favorable goal difference than Arsenal, leader with the same number of points (71). The three-time defending champion, Manchester City, completes the podium with one less unit.

Liverpool led thanks to Luis Diaz (23rd, 0-1) and completely controlled the match at half-time, the locals not having attempted a single strike after the first 45 minutes. But a defensive error allowed Bruno Fernandes (50th) to equalize with a shot from midfield, which found its way into an empty opposing goal. It was the young Kebbie Mainoo who even gave the Red Devils the advantage after the hour mark, with a masterful curling shot at the edge of the area.

A long one-way encounter

A score of 2-1 completely illogical given the chances accumulated by Jürgen Klopp’s men before conceding their first goal of the afternoon. A situation which made the German coach absolutely furious, cursing and yelling at his players who had what it took to kill the match.

Finally, by pushing, Mohamed Salah, very clumsy this Sunday, ended up converting a penalty (84th) to bring the two clubs level and still scratch a point. Enough, all the same, to leave Old Trafford with a ton of regrets, three weeks after an elimination of Liverpool in the FA Cup, at the same place, after conceding two goals in extra time (4-3 ap).

Manchester United, sixth in the Premier League, is not having the dream season, but it managed to upset its rival for the third time on Sunday, after a first draw in the first leg (0-0). These four points abandoned by the Reds in the double confrontation could cost them the title, they who dream of offering their departing coach Jürgen Klopp a second coronation, three years after the previous one. The three members of the podium will no longer face each other by the end of the season and each therefore awaits a poor performance from the others.
