Leon Goretzka is feeling very good right now, he would even say “extremely” good. Or “more stable than ever in my career”. Last week, Bayern’s midfielder spoke to kicker about the current season with its highs and numerous lows. And about the semi-final against Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old has pretty good memories of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, for example. His Schalke team won 4-3 in the second leg of the round of 16 back in 2015, but were still eliminated due to a 0-2 loss in the first leg. “It would obviously be something to progress at the Bernabeu, no question about it,” he says, knowing full well that the first leg will take place in Munich on Tuesday – unlike against Arsenal.

Real are in a position to score two goals without a real chance to score.

The midfielder is nevertheless confident. “I think, just like against Arsenal, we will have phases that we have to endure; where we have to be prepared to suffer; where we have to be prepared to work. Overcoming pressure phases will be an important issue. There will be different games than against Arsenal.” Madrid, he warns, “is capable of scoring two goals without a real chance to score. They have great individual quality, an incredible mentality. That will be a huge challenge.”

The undertaking of jumping on Julian Nagelsmann’s European Championship bandwagon could also be a huge challenge for him. Although of course he doesn’t give up hope. The fact that he is currently Bayern’s third-best provider with nine assists should help him. “I’m extremely motivated, I want to continue to impress with top performances like I did recently and I’ll take on whatever role Julian has in mind for me. Together we can achieve a lot, I’m sure of that.”

What he says about a possible departure from Munich, how he assesses Bayern’s constant setbacks and what the circle was all about before the Arsenal game: Read the big interview with Leon Goretzka on Monday in kicker – or from Sunday evening in the eMagazine!
