Lemma and defending champion Obiri win in Boston

The Ethiopian Sisay Lemma in 2:06:17 hours and the Kenyan Hellen Obiri in 2:22:37 hours won the 128th edition of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

The 34-year-old Obiri repeated her victory last year on the traditional route from Hopkinton through the US state of Massachusetts to Boston and is the first successful defending champion since her compatriot Catherine Ndereba in 2005. Second and third places also went to Sharon Lokedi (2:22:45 ) and former Boston winner Edna Kiplagat (2:23:21) to Kenyans.

Lemma, who won the London Marathon in 2021 and is the fourth fastest marathon runner of all time with his Valencia 2023 winning time of 2:01:48, set a fast pace from the start and ran most of the 42.195km route alone. In the first half, the 33-year-old was significantly faster than Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai’s course record in 2011 (2:03:02). It was the first victory by an Ethiopian in Boston since 2016.

Lemma’s compatriot Mohames Esa (2:06:58) caught up in the final kilometers and came second, 41 seconds behind. Defending champion Evans Chebet (2:07:22), who had won in Boston the past two years, had to settle for third place this time.
