Latvian Basketball Star Žagar Signs Three-Year Deal with Euroleague Club

After a successful performance in the World Cup, helping the Latvian national team win the fifth place, Žagar signed a three-year contract with one of the great Euroleague clubs, Istanbul Fenerbahce.

This season, the Latvian basketball player was loaned to the Lithuanian club Vilnius “Wolves”, in which team he tore the internal lateral ligaments of his left knee last year. Žagar has recovered from his injury and will be back on the pitch soon.

The World Cup record holder, who completed 17 assists in the victory against the Lithuanian team in the fight for fifth place, was included in the second symbolic team of the tournament.

At that time, Žagar, who was without a club, had no shortage of offers. At first, he thought that China was a good option because it was different from building a career in Europe.

“As funny as it is, one of the most realistic options was China. At the very beginning, I thought more about China, but agents and family suggested a smarter career path,” Žagar said.

“I think that maybe I should choose my own path. No one else had done it at that age. I wanted to try something different from the usual career curve,” Žagar said, reflecting on the offer to play in China.
