LaLiga suspects that Rubiales’ RFEF “withdrawn” part of the 447 million it paid him

LaLiga has asked Judge Delia Rodrigo to appear as a private prosecutor in the Super Cup case understanding that “part of the funds contributed” to the RFEF by Luis Rubiales, a total of 447 million euros during the entire mandate of the former federative president, “would have been allegedly distracted by those investigated of those purposes for which they were granted”, as stated in the summary of the case, to which he has had access THE NEWSPAPER OF SPAINfrom the same publishing group.

“Given the very significant financial amount contributed by my sponsor to the RFEF in recent years, it is more than likely that said funds have been withdrawn or used for purposes other than those for which they were granted“says the LaLiga attorney in the letter that she sent last Friday to the court of first instance number 4 of Majadahonda that is investigating the case.

LaLiga’s main argument to defend its request to appear in the case has to do with the alleged extra costs of up to 5.7 million euros in trips paid for by Rubiales’ RFEF, included in one of the reports prepared by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard. At this point, the institution chaired by Tebas recalls that, according to current agreements, LaLiga pays the bill for referees’ travel of the First and Second Division and the rest of the members of the Technical Committee of Referees.

Regarding these alleged extra costs, Globalia, the company that owns Air Europa that signed an agreement with the Federation led by Rubiales, issued a statement last week in which they maintain that the relationship between the company and the RFEF “has always been framed in the activities own of those companies and has been absolutely adjusted to the existing price range in the sector”.

The Super Cup in Saudi Arabia

In another section of the letter, LaLiga also points to the organization of the Super Cup and the “spurious interests contrary to the values of sport” with whom the RFEF allegedly made decisions regarding the championship that has been held for a few years in Saudi Arabia. For this reason, LaLiga requests his appearance as a private accusation, a condition that his president, Javier Tebas, has already held since the beginning of the investigation.

This letter from LaLiga allows, incidentally, to verify that the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) invoiced 447 million euros to LaLiga during the five years of Luis Rubiales’ presidency at the head of the federative body. In the breakdown of amounts, it is clear that Rubiales tripled the invoices issued to the association chaired by Javier Tebas. In the last season without Rubiales at the helm (2017-18) he paid 30 million euros in payments and in the last of them (2022-23) he paid almost 91.

LaLiga investment table in Rubiales’ years as president of the RFEF / EPE

The table that LaLiga attaches in its presentation document allows us to observe the evolution of the amounts that have been contributing to the RFEF in recent seasons. In Rubiales’ first season, 2018-19, there is already a substantial increase in the bill, in a context of recovery of powers by the RFEF.

Viana’s pacts with the Government

The other big leap came in 2020 and is justified for the signing of the Viana pacts, agreements reached in April 2020 between the CSD, LaLiga and the RFEF, with the decisive intervention of the Secretary of State for Sports, Irene Lozano, to mark the roadmap for the return of football after the coronavirus, including the rescue of sport and athletes. With this new agreement, LaLiga increased its contribution to these entities by 54%, up to 95.5 million euros.

Thus, the 90.91 million of Rubiales’ last full year in the federative presidency have little to do with the 30.6 that Ángel María Villar received when he handed over the baton of command to the one from Motril, after the interim term of Juan Luis Larrea. . He tripled the investment and at the end of his mandate the total investment figure of LaLiga Tebas in Rubiales’ RFEF amounted to 447,328,087.92 euros.

As the attorney for the club association states in her letter, “enormous financial amounts in accordance with the provisions of the various Coordination Agreements” to finance aid to the non-professional football, pay arbitration costs and contribute to certain RFEF expenses. Tebas reluctantly paid for part of Rubiales’s party and now wants to make sure that all the money ended up where it belonged. Because he suspects that it wasn’t like that.
