National coach? Lahm is promoting Klopp

Former world champion Philipp Lahm is “very confident” that Jürgen Klopp will one day become national coach. He holds the current coach Nagelsmann responsible

Former world champion Philipp Lahm believes in a future with Jürgen Klopp as coach of the German national soccer team. Lahm told Bild am Sonntag that he could “very well imagine him as a national coach”: “I don’t know when that will be.” But Klopp, who is leaving at the end of the season after nine years at Liverpool FC, has exactly the right qualities for this special job.

The 56-year-old is “very experienced, has been abroad, has a very good approach and a ‘simpler’ style of play than, for example, Pep Guardiola’s,” said Lahm: “This idea would fit well with the national team – simply because there is less time there is to train content. That’s why I’m confident that he’ll become a national coach at some point.”

Lahm: Nagelsmann has cleaned up his mistakes

Last week, the German Football Association (DFB) extended the contract with Julian Nagelsmann until 2026 and thus initially has planning security until the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. In principle, Lahm, tournament director of the home European Championships this summer, believes the early extension is understandable. Nagelsmann has cleared up mistakes of the recent past.

“What has not been done in recent years is to work systematically on the team and define a clear structure,” said Lahm: “Who plays in defense, who in midfield? It gives the impression that Julian Nagelsmann made the right decisions after the chaos that reigned. This is how the national coach found his core. But: It seems so! The proof of this will only be provided if it stays that way over a longer period of time.”
