Ronel Blanco of the Houston Astros sets a record in Major League Baseball by pitching 14 consecutive innings without giving up a hit.
Blanco’s impressive performance included going 14 innings and 44 outs without giving up a hit. This marks the longest hitless streak by a pitcher at the start of a season since 1961.
The beginning of the 2024 season for the Astros has not been impressive, with a 3-7 record and a sweep from the New York Yankees. However, Blanco has excelled as a pitcher and solidified his spot in the rotation, at least for now.
Despite not being as dominant as his previous outing, Blanco once again delivered a solid performance. He achieved four strikeouts and only allowed one hit – a single by Adolis García in the sixth inning – in his six innings on the mound. Blanco also had four walks and pitched a total of 90 pitches before being removed from the game.
On Sunday night, the Houston Astros pitcher did not throw a back-to-back no-hitter, which has only been achieved once in the past 90 years. However, he did make history in the MLB by carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning of their 3-1 victory against the Texas Rangers, before the no-hitter was ultimately broken up.
Last week, Blanco pitched his first no-hitter in the Astros’ 10-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. This was the first no-hitter of the MLB season, happening in just Blanco’s eighth start in the MLB. He successfully retired 26 consecutive batters and only gave up two walks, leading to his upcoming second start against the Rangers.

With Blanco’s effective pitching and a three-run home run by Yordan Álvarez in the third inning, the Astros secured a victory at Globe Life Field. In the ninth inning, Jordan Foscue scored an RBI single, marking his first professional hit for the Texas team. However, the Astros easily retired the remaining two batters to seal the win.
