Kevin Young Chooses Brigham Young: From the NBA to NCAA Coaching

NBA – While he was in the sights of the Hornets and the Nets, Kevin Young chose to join Brigham Young to replace Mark Pope, who left for Kentucky.

The little game of musical chairs is taking place between the NBA and the NCAA since Kevin Young will leave the Suns bench to join that of Brigham Young. He replaces Mark Pope who has just taken John Calipari’s place at Kentucky!

On the shelves of the Hornets and the Nets, Kevin Young made himself known as the right-hand man of Monty Williams, then of Frank Vogel at the Suns. To keep him, the Suns broke the bank last summer. With an annual salary of two million dollars, Young is the highest paid assistant in the NBA.

A salary more than doubled

Aged 42, Kevin Young will explode his salary since we are talking abouta seven-year, $30 million contract ! It’s also a homecoming for him since he’s a native of Salt Lake City. Mormon college specifies that Young will finish the season with the Suns, but that he will start working on his staff and recruiting for next season.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. “We met with several excellent candidates and there was a lot of interest in this position. Kevin is someone we’ve been interested in for a while. He rose to the top among assistants in the NBA. He was a leading candidate for vacancies in the NBA and was instrumental in nurturing young talent into the NBA. Kevin will bring a new vision to our program, with his extensive NBA experience. He fits in perfectly at BYU. He is humble, funny and very intelligent. Cougar Nation will love getting to know Kevin.”
