Kevin Cordón Secures Qualification for Paris 2024 Olympics with Pan American Title

Cordón faced the Salvadoran Uriel Canjura in the final, who had caused a surprise in the semifinals by eliminating the Canadian Bryan Yang, the top figure of the tournament. For his part, the Guatemalan had beaten the Brazilian Ygor Coelho in a close match that was defined with a double 21-19.

The title match began with an impetuous Canjura who dominated the first set with a score of 21-14. However, Cordón did not give up and reacted in the second set, coming back from 11-7 down to win 21-17.

The third and decisive set was a duel of titans, but in the end Cordón’s experience and tenacity prevailed. The Zacapaneco managed to make a crucial difference in the final points and sealed the match with a resounding 21-13.

With this triumph, Cordón, at 37 years old, ensures his fifth participation in the Olympic Games, a feat that makes him one of the most outstanding athletes in the history of national sports. Official confirmation of his qualification for Paris 2024.

“It’s good to feel the support of the people. Seeing the children who are watching this sport, seeing children and the gym full, is something good for you as an athlete. Personally, I feel very happy to win the Pan American tournament again,” expressed Cordón at the end of the tournament.

“I bring those beautiful experiences with people, I will always thank them with all my heart for their support during this time. More so in the difficult situations that I have experienced in my career. So for them to take the time to come here is something very special. I speak as a person and not as an athlete. I thank you with all my heart,” he stated.

Regarding the game and the recovery he had to win, Cordón assured that it was difficult for him to beat the Salvadoran because of the way he approached the match.

“It was an interesting recovery. I couldn’t find my game and the strategy to tire him out. In that he took advantage of me. There were crucial points and I began to despair. That’s why he changed the match in the second set. In the third set things didn’t change and that’s why I was able to extend the advantage,” said Kevin Cordón.
