Kalinina stops Trevisan’s race in Rouen

With backhands, Anhelina Kalina goes straight to the quarterfinals at the “Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole” (prize money $232,244), promoted this year to the higher category (until 2023 it was a WTA 125). On the red clay courts of the “Kindarena Sports Complex” in the capital of Normandy, the Ukrainian (n.32 WTA) won 62 63 against the left-handed Tuscan who had eliminated the former world number 1 and four-time Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Kalinina will play for a place in the semifinals against Mirra Andreeva.

Five breaks mark the first six games of the match. Kalinina plays linear tennis and a heavier ball, especially on the diagonal of the backhand. When he manages to move Trevisan and open the field, from the left the finalist of the last Internazionali BNL d’Italia does particularly well, and consequently the Tuscan does particularly badly.

In the second set, however, the plan of the match changes because it is played more on Martina’s terms and she now applies her plan with more continuity. And Kalinina finds herself struggling more to score a point. Trevisan goes ahead by a break but does not defend the lead. However, he doesn’t stop inventing, extracting short balls, back cuts and fakes from his baggage. And he completes the third break in three games (3-2). But the aggressiveness in response allowed the Ukrainian team to get back into the game once again.

Trevisan doesn’t lack the will, but perhaps a little conviction does. Tuscany doesn’t give up, not even down 3-5. On the contrary. He earns three break points. Kalinina erases two in his own way, with as many heavy backhands; the third Trevisan plays with an aggressive, deep, slightly long response. He pulls out everything he has, Martina, to cancel the first match point, and throws in the diagonal forehand with which he succeeds. When Kalinina shoots the diagonal backhand, however, there is no play. And in the end it was the Ukrainian team that deservedly reached the semi-final.
