Kaiserslautern Bears Ready to Roar in New Baseball Season

Third division baseball team Kaiserslautern Bears starts the new season on Sunday (12 p.m.) with an away game at the Saarlouis Hornets II, which should end with the championship.

Coach Antonio Lopez’s team will be competing in a group of four this season. There are a total of nine games scheduled until the end of July against Saarlouis, Mainz Athletic III and the former German champions Trier Cardinals.

It is a year of change for the oldest still existing US sports club in Kaiserslautern. The squad consists mainly of US military personnel stationed in West Palatinate; the official language is English. The team is coached by player-coach Antonio Lopez. He was already on the pitch as a young player for the Lauterern team and later played for Ladenburg and Saarlouis, among others.

Heimann coaches the youngsters

“Theoretically, we should be able to compete with nine non-EU players this year due to an exemption,” the coach clarifies. Two canceled seasons during the Corona pandemic were not exactly beneficial for the club, which was founded in 1990 and was still playing in the Second Bundesliga a few years ago. It is all the more remarkable that the Barbarossa town team is sending a young team into the race again this season. The youth team trained by Laura Heimann also faces Mainz and Saarlouis.
