Juventus will have to pay 9.8 million euros in back wages to Cristiano Ronaldo

Juventus will have to pay almost 9.8 million euros (plus interest) to Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo: they are part of the back wages owed by the club to Ronaldo, who played for Juventus between 2018 and 2021. The decision has been made in an arbitration, an alternative method of resolving legal disputes by avoiding judicial proceedings, which the two parties can choose together to rely on to find a mediation that is still binding. The arbitration of the FIGC, the Italian football federation, made up of three referees (not football referees, but three people responsible for resolving the dispute), partially accepted the appeal of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had requested the payment of 19, 5 million euros.

That figure concerns four months’ salary that Ronaldo, like his other teammates, had agreed to receive deferred and late at the request of Juventus: in the period between March 2020 and April 2021 the team made this proposal to the players to limit the losses related to the Covid-19 pandemic (the championship was not played for four months, and then resumed without fans in the stadium, causing financial problems for almost all the teams). At Juventus Ronaldo earned around 30 million euros net per year, therefore almost 60 million gross: 19.5 million is the gross salary that he should have received in four months.

In August 2021, however, Ronaldo changed team, moving to Manchester United. Juventus claims that on that occasion Ronaldo had signed a document in which he declared that he no longer had anything to ask financially from the club, therefore he believed that he did not have to repay the player’s monthly payments in arrears. Ronaldo had instead said that he was entitled to them, and for this reason he had decided to resort to arbitration.

The three referees decided by majority (two in favour, one against) to agree with Ronaldo, establishing that Juve had made a mistake in not paying him his back wages. However, they also decided to halve the amount due (from 19.5 to 9.774 million euros) considering the player guilty of complicity with the team.
