Johnny Boykin Returns to Clinton High School as Head Football Coach

Clinton High School has found its next head football coach. Johnny Boykin, a Clinton alum, has been hired to take over the Dark Horses’ program. He confirmed the move with HighSchoolOT this evening. He was approved earlier tonight by the Clinton City Schools board.

Boykin was a member of the 1990 2A state championship team under Bob Lewis, which was the first of five state titles for the Dark Horses.

Boykin has been serving as the head coach at Ragsdale High School in Guilford County since 2017. He led Ragsdale to the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s state playoffs three times. The appearances occurred in his first three seasons. Ragsdale has missed the playoffs the last four years. Ragsdale is 26-46 overall over the past seven years.

The new coach of the Dark Horses also served as the head coach at R.B. Stall High School in Charleston, SC. He also served as an assistant at High Point Central High, Southwestern Randolph High, Union Pines High, T.W. Andrews, and at Ragsdale as the defensive coordinator.

He is taking over for Cory Johnson, who left to become the head coach at Marlboro County High School in South Carolina.

Clinton is coming off of a 15-1 season and an appearance in the 2A state championship game.
