Jeonju Seongsim Girls’ High School, led by Korean women’s badminton legend Jeong So-young, reached the top of the President’s Cup.

Team B of Seongsim Girls’ High School took the top spot at the ‘2024 Korea Badminton Association Long-term National Badminton Competition’, which ended at Seosan Citizen’s Gymnasium and Oullim Gymnasium in South Chungcheong Province on the 22nd. In a heated match that began on the 13th, they beat Seongji Girls’ High School and won the girls’ high school division championship.

This prestigious competition started in 1963 and is now in its 62nd year. 152 teams and 1,033 athletes participated, resulting in fierce competition. This tournament was held as a team event, with a league match followed by a tournament to determine the winning team.

Coach Jeong is a legend who won the women’s doubles gold medal with Hwang Hye-young at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where badminton was adopted as an official sport. In particular, her daughter Kim Hye-jeong (Samsung Life Insurance) also proved her DNA by winning the gold medal in the women’s team event at last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games.

In this competition, the girls’ high school team had a heated competition with the participation of Kim Min-seon’s Chiak High School, famous for being twin sisters. However, Coach Jeong’s Seongsim Girls’ High School rose to the top, beating Yeongdeok High School and Gimcheon Girls’ High School A (tied for third place). Coach Jeong received the best leader award for the girls’ high school division, and Ga-hyeon Lee was selected as the best player.
