Jannik Sinner Triumphs over Provocative Holger Rune in Monte Carlo Quarter-Finals

Holger Rune provokes the fans.

Jannik Sinner is in the semi-finals of Monte Carlo. The Sesto native prevailed in a battle of nerves against “Bad Boy” Holger Rune on Friday. This drove the fans crazy.

When Holger Rune trotted off the field on Friday afternoon after his quarter-final defeat against Jannik Sinner, the spectators farewelled him with lots of whistles. The young Danish star has once again drawn the ire of fans. Only one person was left completely unaffected: Jannik Sinner. The way the Sesto native dealt with the chaotic situation was worthy of a champion.

What happened? With the score at 5:5 in the second set, Rune once again exceeded the time limit on his own serve. As a result, he received a warning from the referee – and many whistles from the fans. The 20-year-old then made a provocative gesture, signaling to the audience: “Just whistle, just whistle.” The consequence: Rune received a second warning.

This in turn drove the world number 7 into a rage: The Dane sat down on the players’ bench like an offended child and asked the referee for the supervisor. He finally came onto the field and calmed the angry tennis star. The match continued, but in the third set there was another dispute with the referee. “Everyone is against me,” complained Rune when a ball he had seen out of bounds was ruled good.

“I learned from last year.” Jannik Sinner

This provocative posturing is nothing new to Rune; in fact, it is an essential part of his game. This time the opponent was not influenced by this, because Jannik Sinner won the battle of nerves in three sets and is in the semi-finals. His words after the match are worthy of a champion: “When Rune protested, I tried to think about myself. There’s nothing wrong with causing a little chaos. I have learned from the past year. These moments are part of the process.”

Otherwise, Sinner was satisfied after the almost three-hour battle of nerves. “Playing against Rune is always difficult. It was a very physical match. I had a good feeling and am confident about the semi-final on Saturday against Stefanos Tsitsipas,” said Sinner in an interview on the court.
