Jannik Sinner Reflects on Recent Success and Looks Ahead to the Season Ahead

Monaco/Monte Carlo – Jannik Sinner looks forward to the coming weeks in a relaxed manner. After winning titles in Australia and Miami, the man from Sexten hopes to be able to build on these successes on the sand he doesn’t like as much. For him, the prestigious ATP 1000 Rolex Monte Carlo Masters is “only” the first milestone that will take him to the highlights of the season – Roland Garros in Paris, Rome, Wimbledon and of course to the Olympic Games. In an interview with the Corriere della Sera The Sesto tennis champion not only looks at this year’s competition season, but also provides some insights into his life as a tennis professional.

Jannik Sinner, who is now number 2 in the ATP world rankings, still resembles the young player from last year who was not yet close on Novak Djokovic’s heels. While the hype surrounding the tennis superstar from South Tyrol is becoming increasingly bizarre, especially in Italy, the 22-year-old tennis professional wants nothing more than a completely normal life.

“I like the pressure, but it’s important to me to lead a normal life. Things went very well in the fast places. “Let’s see if I can build on that on the sand,” Jannik told the Corriere della Sera.

Across the Atlantic, the Sesto native was not only able to reap sporting laurels. The pictures that showed Jannik holding an umbrella for a ball girl, playing with a toddler or handing water to a spectator earned him praise for being a gentleman. “It seemed to me like I was doing normal things. On the pitch I am serious and prepare carefully for the match, but after the game I like to joke. I am like that, I’ve always been like that. The difference is that now there are more cameras on me and I get more attention,” says Jannik, who adds that the praise is exaggerated and he also has mistakes.

“I too can get angry and that’s right. There is a time to joke, a time to be angry, a time to be serious. My mistake in tennis is that sometimes I don’t go fast enough. I want to learn everything straight away, but I’ve noticed that if I rush, I lose the necessary clarity in my head. Instead of helping me, something like this harms me,” explains the 22-year-old tennis professional.

“Apparently I’ve grown. Instead of 1.88 meters as stated on the ATP website, I am 1.92 to 1.93 meters tall. I don’t go overboard with the weights because it would be way too risky. In the gym, only me and my team know how much I train. The result is that I’m fine. I played all of 2023 and have had no problems so far this year. And even when I’m tired, I recover faster. I have also developed tactically. I can now play without thinking too much. Thinking slows down the flow of the game, but now everything happens much more naturally. To be able to do that, you have to be able to trust your body and certain shots, which I wasn’t able to do so well in the past,” said the 22-year-old.

When asked about Novak Djokovic’s view that Jannik’s big change compared to last year is that he is now winning the important games, the 22-year-old from Sesto is modest. “Yes, but I can’t win everything, it’s impossible. As happened in Indian Wells, I can also lose. Last year I was able to improve constantly. On fast surfaces I have already taken the last step that was missing before. Everything changes on the sand. “I have difficult but also interesting months ahead of me,” says Jannik, who has gained four kilograms of muscle mass, looking forward to the coming weeks.

But more important to him than the victories is his family environment and his circle of friends. He even invited one of his friends, who knew him from school, to the tournament in Indian Wells.

When asked whether he could imagine carrying the flag at the Olympic Games, Jannik Sinner shows all his modesty. “Frankly, the flag should be carried by someone who bases his sporting career on the Olympics. If they want to give it to me, I’m happy, but as a tennis player I have the four Slams, the nine ATP Tour Masters 1000 and the Davis Cup. For me the Olympic Games are a tournament. For others, however, they are the tournament par excellence. Usain Bolt said in an interview: ‘I’ve been training for four years to run a hundred meters in nine seconds.’ “That impressed me,” says the Sexten native.

If he is satisfied with his own performance, Jannik “rewards” himself with fettuccine with veal ragout. “Every time he returns from Miami or Australia, he comes to us the next night to eat the fettuccine. “He eats with us either with his girlfriend or with a member of his team,” says the restaurant’s chef. The number 2 in the tennis world wants nothing more than to lead a normal life.
