Jannik Sinner made a big statement at the start of the European clay court season. The reigning Australian Open champion celebrated a confident 6:1 and 6:2 victory over the American Sebastian Korda at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo.
Sinner, who has only suffered one defeat so far this season (against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals in Indian Wells), also underlined his ambitions on clay. The 22-year-old has a good chance of displacing Novak Djokovic from the top of the world rankings in the coming weeks. In the round of 16, the Italian will face the German Jan-Lennard Struff.
Sonego takes advantage of second chances
Sinner’s compatriot Lorenzo Sonego also made it to the round of 16 on Wednesday. The 28-year-old lucky loser, who slipped into the main draw for the injured Alcaraz, beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6:4 and 7:5. Karen Khachanov also won against Francisco Cerundolo in three sets.
Meanwhile, defending champion Andrey Rublev suffered a bitter defeat against Alexei Popyrin. The Australian will now face his compatriot Alex de Minaur.
