Jan-Lennard Struff Falls to Jannik Sinner in Monte Carlo Round of 16

In Monte Carlo, Alexander Zverev had to give up against Stefanos Tsitsipas. In the afternoon Jan-Lennard Struff was challenged against Jannik Sinner – and had to bow to the second in the world rankings.

Jan-Lennard Struff defended himself as best he could in the 4:6, 2:6 win against Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner on Thursday, but overall he had no chance against the South Tyrolean.

“I broke him early, he broke me back straight away,” Sinner recapitulated after winning the round of 16 in Monte Carlo, “that can have a big impact on the momentum of a match.” But it didn’t, because the 22-year-old subsequently improved, showed his usual high level and repeatedly hit the lines with his shots.

Because Struff only got 44 percent of his all-important first serves into the field, he was unable to convert an otherwise solid performance into more points. After 1:18 hours he had to congratulate his counterpart.

The 33-year-old German veteran has plenty of world ranking points to defend in the clay court season. In Monte Carlo last year he made it to the quarter-finals, and at the Masters in Madrid he only lost in the final against high-flyer Carlos Alcaraz. Struff will hardly be able to maintain 25th place in the ATP ranking.
