Italian Archers Shine in First Stage of Indoor World Series: Tonioli and Noziglia Lead the Way

The first stage, held online over the weekend, saw the Italians Marcella Tonioli and Cinzia Noziglia shine, first in the general rankings in the compound and bare bow. High level performances also for Mijno, Brunello and Berti

Excellent performances for the Italian archers registered in the first stage of the Indoor World Series, an event that took place all over the world remotely due to the pandemic. In Italy many participants competed at Malpensa Fiere in the competitions organized by the Monica Archers Company (Saturday) and the Varese Archers (Sunday), while other scores were recorded individually from the training field or in other competitions not included in the World Archery calendar. At the end of the 60 arrows at 18 meters, Italy rejoices for the first place of the Italians Marcella Tonioli in the compound and Cinzia Noziglia in the bare bow. In this last division Ferruccio Berti also shines, conquering the new master world record (awaiting approval).

The results of the Olimpico

With 598 points, the German Felix Wieser takes the lead in the men’s recurve rankings with a two-point advantage over the South Korean Oh Jin Hyek and three over the Frenchman Tom Millon. The best Italians are Lorenzo Artuso, 50th with 578 points, and Michele Frangilli, 57th with 577. Unfortunately for the Olympian, Saturday’s score was valid for the ranking and not Sunday’s: if he had made the 589 points obtained valid yesterday, he would have climbed into the top 10… South Korea at the top in women’s recurve with Oh Jung Ah in 1st place with 587 points, but the race of the Paralympic champion Elisabetta Mijno is also excellent: the Fiamme Azzurre athlete with 575 goes up in 17th place.

Tonioli first in the compound

The men’s compound ranking is led by the Slovenian Stas Modic with 598. The best of the Italians is the Italian Antonio Brunello, 14th with 593 points, tied with the Dutch world record holder Mike Schloesser, while Marco Bruno closes his test 28th with 590 points. Great women’s competition for the highly decorated Marcella Tonioli who totaled 590 points shooting from the Montalcino Archers’ training field: she took first place with the Belgian Sarah Prieels, indoor world record holder. Third place for the Brazilian Jane Karla Gogel (589) who last winter took the Paralympic world record from the Italian Maria Andrea Virgilio.

Noziglia dominates in bare bow

The performances of the Italians in bare bow were excellent. Ferruccio Berti is 4th in the men’s competition with 548 points which is worth the new masters world record. The previous record of 541 set by the American Rick Stonebraker was beaten. Berti is overtaken in the rankings only by a Swedish trio led by Erik Jonsson, 1st with 569. In fifth position is Cristian Trolese with 547 and in 7th place Daniele Bellotti with 539. First place overall for the Fiamme Oro champion Cinzia Noziglia leads the general ranking with 534 points scored in Casarza Ligure. Another satisfaction after the world record on 25 arrows achieved a few weeks ago. The second stage of the Indoor World Series is scheduled for next month, on the weekend of December 19th and 20th. Italian archers naturally aim to maintain the top positions in compound and bare bow and to climb the rankings in the Olympic arch.
