Injustice on the Court: French Badminton Players Robbed of Olympic Dream

From dream to nightmare in just a few minutes. Qualified in the men’s doubles table of the badminton tournament, Ronan Labar and Lucas Corvée could finally watch the Olympic Games on TV, as RMC Sport announced on Wednesday. The fault lies with an error in calculating points by the International Federation which ultimately places them behind the pair Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov. All for 29 points!

Regularly updated since the start of the Olympic race, the “Race to Paris” ranking set up in May 2023 has in fact been distorted since the first tournament in China. Other international players were penalized without as many consequences as for the two French people. Ronan Labar expressed his distress on RMC Sport on Thursday, speaking of an “earthquake”, an “explosion”. “I personally spent a sleepless night dwelling on this whole year, all the sacrifices we had to make,” said the player.

But what is the Fed doing?

The International Federation communicated this Friday, recognizing an error in its calculations, without drawing the slightest conclusion, other than confirming its final ranking. How could such an error be possible? How could it not have been rectified within a year? It is certain that Labar and Corvée would have approached the following tournaments in a completely different state of mind if they had known that they had to make up for these missing points.

It is thus the project of a life which disappears due to the incompetence of federal leaders. It’s up to them to fix this mistake. Because if the Popov brothers have won their place on the floors, Labar and Corvée have lost it in the offices. The International Federation has no choice but to send them to the Games as well. It is then up to her to organize herself at the time of the Olympic tournament to think of a new format which will allow the registration of an additional pair.
