As Werder Bremen announced on Friday afternoon, Pieper suffered a trauma to his ankle during a duel in the away game in Frankfurt last weekend (1-1). As a result, “the same problems that made an operation necessary last summer arose again,” Bremen’s head of professional football Clemens Fritz is quoted as saying in the statement.
Pieper had to undergo surgery in the final spurt of last season due to persistent ankle problems. Now another intervention is necessary. This is the result of “further examinations that were carried out by another expert in coordination with team doctor Dr. Georg Tsironis,” writes Werder. The operation is scheduled to be carried out in Bremen at the beginning of next week. Pieper should be available again at the start of training for the new season.
Pieper’s plague season continues
This continues an epidemic season for the 26-year-old central defender. After starting the first six Bundesliga games, he was initially sidelined due to muscular problems and then suffered a broken ankle during training at the end of November. In Frankfurt he played in a competitive game for the first time after a four-month break, but had to be substituted at the beginning of the second half.
“We are very sorry for Amos because he had to fight back quicker than expected after his broken ankle,” Fritz is quoted as saying, who also complains: “With our current staffing levels, the loss of Amos is of course extremely bitter for us as a team. ” In the away game against designated champions Leverkusen on Sunday (5.30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), the alternatives for coach Ole Werner will be scarce, especially in defense, as Marco Friedl (5th yellow card), Anthony Jung and Jens Stage (both red) each locked is missing. Niklas Stark is probably not an option for the starting eleven yet after his medial ligament injury.
