Injuries and Rebuild: The Uncertain Future of Yoán Moncada with the Chicago White Sox

The reconstruction of the Chicago White Sox has already begun, but it will intensify during this MLB season in which they have a 5-22 record in this first month of action.

The compromised situation of the team led by Pedro Grifol will lead them to see several of their players leave and one of those who may have played their last game in this uniform is Yoán Moncada.

The Cuban third baseman is at risk of missing the entire Major League season due to an injury he suffered on April 10 and that could mean the end of his time with the white-legged franchise. There are indications to reach that conclusion.

At 28 years old, the third baseman is on the 60-day injured list and there are doubts that he will be able to return to the field this season. In just the 11th game of this season he suffered the adductor injury that threatens to leave him inactive for three to six months. And it’s just the latest chapter in his long history of physical problems. Moncada has never been able to play 150 games in a season and has suffered injuries to his hamstring, back, foot, oblique and quadriceps in the last four years.

Since the winter, manager Chris Getz has been transparent with the management he will undertake, which is nothing more than a rebuild of the team. The executive declared that he does not like the squad and that there are no untouchables and that will decree the departure of several figures. Moncada is surely one of those on the list to be part of this cleanup operation.

The Cuban signed a contract extension with the White Sox in 2020 for 5 seasons and $70 million. The pact contains a club option for 2025 for $14 million that they most likely will not exercise, so he will go to free agency and there are no guarantees that Chicago will negotiate his return.

Moncada was making good contact at the time of his injury, but he was coming off disappointing years offensively. Of his first 8 years in the majors, in 5 he has finished with more than 100 strikeouts and only once did he hit .300. It was in 2019, the same year in which he achieved personal bests in RBIs (79) and home runs (25).

Neither Danny Mendick nor Braden Shewmake, who have filled in for Moncada at third base since his injury, have been able to hit regularly, but the market will offer the White Sox several options to replace the Cuban. Depending on what they decide to invest, they can think about going for Alex Bregman, Justin Turner or Gio Urshela, to name a few examples, or looking for a change for DJ LeMahieu or Jeimer Candelario.
