Monterrey was again too strong for Inter Miami on Wednesday night in the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup. After winning the first leg 1-2, the return in Mexico ended 3-1. Lionel Messi participated in the entire match this time, provided an assist, but is missing out on the World Cup for club teams due to the elimination.

While Messi had to miss the first leg at the Chase Stadium due to an injury, the Argentinian superstar was there in Monterrey. Messi formed an attacking duo with soulmate Luis Suárez, while FC Barcelona friends Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets could also count on a starting place at Inter Miami.

In the end it was a dramatic evening for Inter Miami, which was ushered in by goalkeeper Drake Callender. After half an hour, the American closing post simply played the ball into the feet of Brandon Vazquez, who could easily finish: 1-0.

After the break it was Germán Berterame who scored the best goal of the match. The Argentinian striker shot the ball mercilessly into the intersection behind Callender: 2-0. After 64 minutes, a header from Jesús Gallardo finally closed the game: 3-0. Alba was subsequently sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the match.

Diego Gómez scored the honorary goal for Inter Miami from a wonderfully cut free kick from Messi, which missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup due to the defeat. The Concacaf Champions Cup is the premier tournament for clubs from North America, the Caribbean and Central America, as the winner qualifies for the Club World Cup.

Monterrey will soon face Major League Soccer winner Columbus Crew in the semi-finals. The other contenders for overall victory are Pachuca and Club América, in a Mexican get-together.

This will be a special diptych for the Dutch-born wingers Javairô Dilrosun (Club América) and Oussama Idrissi (Pachuca), as the attacking duo not long ago won the Dutch national title together with Feyenoord. The Concacaf Champions Cup will resume on April 23.
