Ice Hockey World Cup: Austria botches the start of the home World Cup

Ice Hockey World Cup

Austria’s women’s ice hockey team has botched the start of the home World Cup in Division 1A (B-WM). The Austrians lost against Norway 2:3 (0:0 1:0 1:3) in the Heidi-Horten-Arena in Klagenfurt on Sunday. The Norwegians turned the game around in the final third with three goals within five and a half minutes. On Monday (7:30 p.m., live on ORF Sport +) the Austrians will continue against South Korea, which Hungary lost 2-0.

“This is very disappointing, not the start we expected,” said captain Anna Meixner. The ÖEHV selection needed a few minutes to get into the game, but then created very good chances. Captain Ana Meixner failed solo against the Norwegian goalkeeper (7th), defender Annika Fazokas only hit the crossbar (10th). On the other hand, the Norwegians were always dangerous, but were unable to overcome goalkeeper Selma Luggin.

There was a livelier start in the middle third, which was rewarded with a goal. Swiss legionnaire Fazokas let a Norwegian out and her shot found its way into the goal (24th). Coach Alexander Bröms’ team was unable to use three subsequent power plays; the Scandinavians used their power play at the beginning of the final third.

Austria is narrowly defeated by Norway

At the start of the Women’s Ice Hockey B World Championship, Austria narrowly had to admit defeat to Norway. In Klagenfurt the Austrians took a 1-0 lead. In the end, however, they lost 2:3. In the next game Austria will face South Korea.

Curious leadership from the Norwegians

Millie Rose Sirum equalized (42nd) and gave the guests a lot of energy. An unfortunate move from Luggin gave Norway the lead. The goalkeeper’s disc jumped from behind the goal directly to Josefine Biseth Engmann, who pushed it into the empty goal (46th), Sirum increased the score to 3-1 (48th). In the finish, the Austrians had a lot of power play and scored the next goal with a double majority through Fazokas (57th). It wasn’t enough to equalize, so there was a setback right from the start in the fight for the hoped-for promotion.

The lack of evaluation of opportunities deprived the red-white-red team of success. “On the whole it was okay, but when you have so much power play, we have to score one or two and win the game,” summarized Meixner. “It’s a shame. Good chances are of no use if you don’t take them,” explained double goalscorer Fazokas.
