Hurkacz Shows Progress on Clay at Estoril, But Falls to Ruud in Quarterfinals

Hurkacz has made big progress on ocher. His title at Estoril shows this well. That said, he still has work to do if he wants to be able to compete with specialists such as Casper Ruud. The double Roland-Garros finalist completely muzzled a probably exhausted Hurkacz (6-4, 6-2 in 1h13).

Sovereign on serve (0 break points conceded) and still as solid on clay, notably thanks to his topspin forehand, Ruud quietly won his place for the quarter-finals. The Norwegian advances silently but advances nonetheless.

In the next round, he will face the winner of the match between Sonego and Humbert. An opponent well within the reach of the world number 10. At least on paper.
