Hugo Franco of Cuba places fourth in Pan American Archery Championship

Havana.- THE CUBAN GUY Hugo Franco grew again today in front of the targets to say goodbye with a creditable fourth place in the Pan American Archery Championship of Medellín 2024, in Colombia.

Getting on the podium turned out to be a dream that only prevented the most accurate tie-breaker arrow fired by the American Jack Williams. However, the man from Pinar del Río will be able to return home with the conviction of having “sold dearly” his defeat.

The captain of the island’s men’s team once again showed stability during the throws of a match extended to five sets, against an opponent located in the 29th place in the world ranking and experience in the last Olympic event.

If it were not enough to gauge the level of the northerner, it is enough to add that he was part of the team that won the title at the XIX Pan American Games in Santiago 2023 and finished second in the universal competition two years before.

“Another tense, very difficult match, in which Hugo had a great performance,” summarized coach Reiter Téllez, who recognizes the high value of that fourth place, although like the rest of the Cuban army he wanted to see him with a medal on his chest.

In the match for the title, the Mexican Matías Grande dominated, with a score of 6-4 points over the American Jackson Mirich. Among women, Casey Kaufhold, from the United States, defeated the Aztec Alejandra Valencia 6-5.

Cuba attended the continental competition with the complex purpose of obtaining one of the available Olympic quotas – two individuals and one for teams of each sex – in the recurve bow modality.

Despite the efforts made in a competition animated by many elite figures, the Antilleans were left without access to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The tickets for the teams ended up in the hands of the Colombians and the Americans, who thus joined the Mexicans, who had previously qualified. Cuba anchored in fifth place in both calls.

The individual ballots went to the Canadian Kristine Esebua, the Puerto Rican Alondra Rivera, the Argentine Mario Jajarabilla and Nicolas D’Amour, from the British Virgin Islands.
