Holger Rune outlasts Grigor Dimitrov in Marathon ATP Masters Match

Holger Rune competed in a marathon match in the round of 16 at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo Grigor Dimitrov enforced. The Dane won 7:6(9), 3:6, 7:6(2).

Holger Rune had to be on the court against Grigor Dimitrov for over three and a half hours.

The entertaining game between Holger Rune and Grigor Dimitrov lasted three and a half hours. At 90 minutes, the first set exceeded the length of a complete match. Both players exchanged breaks with each other once. There were a total of 20 points in the tiebreak, which Holger Rune won.

The second set then lasted the “usual” 44 minutes, as Holger Rune lost his serve at the beginning and end of the round and so the set was equalized. So the third section had to bring the decision in this marathon match. And in this, the player returned to the “set one” principle.

Rune fended off two match points

Both players failed to receive their opponent’s serve. But with the score at 6:5 for Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune had to fend off two break points, which also meant match points for the Bulgarian.

Again the tiebreak decided the set and thus the outcome of the game. This was less spectacular than the first of the game Holger Rune quickly pulled away with consistency in the game. Of five possible match points, the Dane then used the second attempt after a forehand error to end the match as the winner. Jannik Sinner, who won against Jan-Lennard Struff, is now waiting in the quarter-finals on Friday.
