Attacking the Amstel Gold Race 62 km from the finish, Lapeira was then able to slip into the decisive breakaway (12 riders). Although he was unable to follow the Pidcock-Hirschi-Benoot-Vansevenant quartet, he still left the 2nd group and closed to 9″ of the leading men.
