Hans-Joachim Watzke Wishes Schalke 04 to Stay in the 2nd Bundesliga: “A Strong Piece of German Football”

Hans-Joachim Watzke wishes Borussia Dortmund’s arch-rivals Schalke 04 to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. “What should I do for Schalke? Keep my fingers crossed that they keep the second division,” said the BVB managing director in the podcast “Spielmacher – The EM Talk with Sebastian Hellmann and 360Media”.

Watzke can’t get used to the scenario at all – for a very specific reason. “Because the idea that we would play with our second team against Schalke in the third division next year is a horror idea for me,” said the 64-year-old. Schalke is “a strong piece of German football”.

Schalke “of course did a lot wrong” in the last decade, said Watzke, “but that hurts me, despite all the rivalry. When you see that a club that is still of this size, that they are against them Relegation is playing in the second division. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for them.”

With seven match days to go, Gelsenkirchen are in 14th place, just two points ahead of relegation place 16. The first direct relegation spot is three points away.
