Handball: Germany and France are hosting the 2029 Handball World Cup

Germany will join France in hosting the men’s handball world championship in five years. This was announced by the International Handball Federation (IHF). The opening game and the final round will take place in the French capital Paris.

“France and Germany are two great host nations with whom world handball can look forward to the next development step,” said the President of the German Handball Federation (DHB), Andreas Michelmann. The association announced that it was considering involving other nations. “It is conceivable that a preliminary group of the German strand will take place in a neighboring country,” said CEO Mark Schober.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) spoke of a “great decision for us as a sporting nation”. In addition, the joint World Cup is a further sign of the “close German-French friendship”. She continued: “I am sure that together we will be excellent hosts for teams and fans from all over the world.”

Next year, Germany will host the Women’s World Cup together with the Netherlands. In 2027, Germany will be the sole host of the men’s World Cup.

The IHF has also allocated additional venues for upcoming world championships. In 2031, the Men’s World Cup will take place in Denmark, Iceland and Norway. The women will play for the world title in Spain in 2029 and in the Czech Republic and Poland in 2031.
