The separation of the Serbian world number one from his coach Goran Ivanisevic caused great excitement in the industry. Now the coach explains how this step came about.

This step had not been announced to the public. But for Ivanisevic it had been on the horizon for a long time, as the Croatian now revealed.

“The first time I had that feeling, if I’m being completely honest, was last year in America,” Ivanisevic told the Sport Klub broadcaster about an impending separation between the two superstars of their sport.

Ivanisevic, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, and record Grand Slam winner Djokovic had “become tired of each other,” said the Croatian.

After the defeat at Wimbledon 2023 against Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic played in a frenzy in the USA.

“It was an incredible run – the final against Alcaraz in Cincinnati, the victory at the US Open,” recalled the 2005 Davis Cup winner. “But then I really had the feeling that the end was near.”

Ivanisevic: Separation from Djokovic a matter of time

Ultimately, the only question was whether the two would separate at the end of last season or not until the new year.

“In hindsight you could probably say it should have been, but after the US Open I had that surgery on my knee,” he said. Therefore, the final decision was given until 2024.

At the end of a successful but also challenging collaboration over five years, Ivanisevic had the feeling that he “could no longer help” his Serbian protégé.

Corona pandemic as a test

The 52-year-old emphasized that the time during the corona pandemic was particularly difficult. At the time, Djokovic was “called the biggest villain on the planet” because he didn’t get vaccinated.

The Serb missed numerous tournaments because of this, especially in the USA. The visa drama before the Australian Open 2022, when Djokovic was refused entry, also made headlines.

Two years later, the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne was also the last major in which the two tennis greats worked together.
