The Spanish tennis player Roberto Carballés added his second victory in the Marrakech tournament to advance to the quarterfinals, the same round that his compatriots Pablo Llamas and Pedro Martínez reached this Thursday at the ATP event in Estoril (Portugal), also on land.
Carballés, current champion in the Moroccan tournament, defeated the British Daniel Evans 6-4, 7-6(3), in his 100th ATP victory and in search of the third title of his career. The Canarian, who already beat the Englishman in the last edition, was scheduled for a place in the semifinals of Marrakech with the American Nicolás Moreno de Alborán.
Furthermore, in the Estoril event, the round of 16 included two Spanish duels. On the one hand, Llamas defeated (7-6 (2), 6-4) a David Jordà whom he had already eliminated in the previous phase, but who returned as a ‘lucky loser’ to achieve his first ATP victory.
However, in the second round on Portuguese soil, Llamas became strong to reach their first quarterfinals. The 21-year-old from Cádiz will now face the Polish Hubert Hurkacz, second seed, who debuted this Thursday by beating the British Jan Choinski 7-6(5), 6-4.
Meanwhile, Martínez defeated Roberto Bautista (7-5, 7-4) to meet Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals. The Valencian made it 2-0 in direct duels with the player from Castellón in a very close duel where Bautista sought a comeback without success, prolonging his bad moment against the recent Girona Challenger champion.
