Golf: Straka on the rise at US Masters

The three Americans Max Homa, Bryson DeChambeau and the world number one Scottie Scheffler are in the lead with 138 strokes (six under par). Defending champion Jon Rahm made it into the weekend in 44th place with five over par (149). Likewise Tiger Woods: The veteran US star made the cut in 22nd place with 145 strokes for the 24th time in a row, something no one has ever achieved before.

For Straka, the day went very well in strong winds with three birdies and only one bogey until the last hole. On 18, another bogey meant a small setback. “Overall, I’m very happy with the round. The whole place was brutal. Bogey can happen out there,” Straka said afterwards.

Straka is looking forward to better weather

The weather is expected to improve this weekend. “It was a little more difficult today. The wind was even stronger all day long. The greens are getting a little harder now and I think they will be pretty hard at the weekend,” said Straka.

“I’ve never played here with good weather, it was always either cold, rainy, windy. “So I’m looking forward to the weekend,” said the Viennese, commenting on the good forecast. Straka tees off with Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. CEST. In any case, the Viennese has a good chance of a top placement, his best at the Masters so far (previously 30th and 46th).

“Something to eat and some caffeine”

Since his first Masters victory in 1997, Woods has always qualified for the two decisive rounds on the weekend in his starts at Augusta. The 15-time major champion trumped South Africa’s golf legend Gary Player and US idol Fred Couples, who each made the cut at the Masters 23 times in a row.

After his next record coup, Woods knew exactly what his body needed after eight hours on the golf course. “All I need is some food and some caffeine and I’m good to go,” joked the 48-year-old Californian at the Augusta National Golf Club on Magnolia Lane.

“It’s really tight”

The stormy wind made life on the golf course extremely difficult for Woods and Co. on the second day of the tournament. “I am tired. It was a long 23 holes, a long day,” admitted Woods, who had to finish the last five holes of his first round early in the morning. The evening before, the opening round was canceled due to darkness.

Woods doesn’t think anyone can pull away in these stormy conditions. “It’s really tight.” It remains to be seen whether Woods can hold his own physically on the two crucial days. The long-standing world number one broke his right leg several times in a serious car accident in February 2021. Since then, Woods has only competed in a few select tournaments.
