Gillé and Vliegen Claim Doubles Title at ATP Masters 1,000 in Monte-Carlo

Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen, both ranked 29th in the world in doubles, won the doubles at the ATP Masters 1,000 tennis tournament in Monte-Carlo on Sunday. The Belgian duo beat the Brazilian Marcelo Melo (ATP 49 in doubles) and the German Alexander Zverev (ATP 168 in doubles) in the final 5-7, 6-3, 10/5 in 1 hour and 34 minutes of play.

Melo and Zverev broke at 5-5 in the first set. In the next game, Gillé and Vliegen had two break points, but their opponents converted their first set point.

The Belgian duo started the second set well with a break in the second game. Gillé and Vliegen missed three set points at 5-2 and another set point in the next game before returning to a set all.

Gillé and Vliegen quickly took off in the super decisive game, leading 5/2 then 7/3. At 9/4, they missed a first title point. The second was the right one and the two Belgians were able to celebrate the most important title of their career.

Gillé, 33, and Vliegen, 30, now have eight titles on the ATP circuit. This is their first coronation in a Masters 1,000, for their first final in a tournament of this level located just below the Grand Slams. Before that, they won in Bastad, Gstaad and Zhuhai in 2019, in Nur-Sultan in 2020, in Singapore in 2021 and in Estoril and Pune last year. They have also been beaten five times in the final, including last year at Roland Garros for their first Grand Slam final.
