(sks). The city’s rejection of a new hall and the question of whether a competitive budget can be set up in the long term have recently given rise to doubt. But it is now clear that the Giessen 46ers will apply for a BBL license again.

Managing director Jonathan Kollmar confirmed this when asked by this newspaper. Last year the club kept a low profile for a long time. This year Kollmar says: »We will submit the documents on April 15th. For both BBL and ProA.«

    Budget needs to increase significantly

In both cases, the budget must be increased significantly. In the Bundesliga, this is even linked to new statutes, which stipulate that sales must increase by 500,000 euros every two years. “These are large sums of money and you have to communicate that honestly,” says Kollmar. It is important to include everyone in the decision-making process and ask: “Do you want this? Does the region want that? It would be fatal if we thought differently.«

With regard to BBL, this is a fateful decision that is closely linked to the hall situation and a potential (partial) move to Wetzlar. But even in the ProA it is difficult to put together a competitive team without promotion prospects. Players like Luis Figge, Robin Benzing and Stefan Fundic could each be tied down for at least two years, as this hope of promotion has always existed up to now.

Budget, team strength and hall perspective (and also its capacity utilization, see preliminary report on the left) would depend on each other. According to Kollmar, the budget is “secured even without a name sponsor” in the ProA, “but then we would have a significantly lower budget.”

Gießen would then probably no longer be involved in the playoffs, but would instead eke out an existence in mediocrity. The keyword name sponsor finally opens up the question of what things actually look like at JobStairs, which gave it its name. The job portal was most recently sold to the Bertelsmann Group. Kollmar is in constant communication with managing director Ingolf Teetz, as the sponsorship would expire this summer after it was extended again a year ago: “There is mutual interest, but it is open. At this level you need a name sponsor to support you. And I am positive that this will continue to be the case in the future,” the manager continued.

    Discussions about naming sponsor

In contrast to professional handball and football, name sponsorships are permitted in basketball. Orchid clubs like Balingen in handball or Heidenheim in football are becoming increasingly rare in sports with the orange leather. You must therefore take advantage of this advantage.

While the discussions with JobStairs were ongoing and were given top priority, other discussions were also being held at the same time: “You also have to think outside the box.” It is quite possible that something will happen here by April 15th. After all, there must be a provisional budget for the license application. And the topic of further signings is slowly but surely on the agenda: “Before you talk to players, the situation must first be clarified. In order to keep a team, the budget has to improve,” says coach “Frenki” Ignjatovic, who believes that something concrete will become apparent in the next week or two.
