Germany’s Wagner and Böhm secure medals at European Championships, eyes set on Olympic qualification opportunity

A win over Serbia secured them a place in the semi-finals, but France proved too strong.

On Saturday, Anna-Maria Wagner and Alina Böhm won the first medals for Germany in the weight class up to 78 kilograms.

Wagner won silver after being defeated by France’s Audrey Tcheumeo in the final. Böhm was able to celebrate bronze, having previously also failed due to Tcheumeo.

“My mission was to defend my title. I didn’t succeed in that, but I’m still overjoyed with the bronze,” said Böhm about her performance. She has been able to celebrate the European Championship title in each of the past two years.

European Championship important for Olympic qualification

The results of the European Championships are also important with regard to Olympic qualification. The decision about the starting places will only be made at the World Cup in Abu Dhabi (May 19th to 24th).

In the women’s category, Wagner and Böhm are fighting for a German starting place for the games in Paris in the class up to 78 kilos.
