Caitlin Clark (left) was drafted first overall in the WBNA but questions about her salary are being raised.

INTERNATIONAL – Even the White House is getting involved. The announcement of Caitlin Clark’s entry into the professional women’s basketball league in the United States came as no surprise. What was, however, for sports fans, is the salary that the player will receive, considered far too insufficient.

The Iowa native amazed the world during his final college season. Selected in first position in the WNBA by the Indiana Fever team, her salary was immediately revealed by the specialist site Sportrac on Tuesday April 16.

As you can see above, the one dubbed by LeBron James would earn $338,000 over four years, $76,000 in the first year. His salary would then increase each year. But the sum seems outrageously low if we compare it to that won by Victor Wembanyama. The Frenchman, first in the 2023 draft on the boy’s side, earned $12 million for the 2023-2024 season alone, out of the $55 million expected in four years.

Audience records and increased interest in the WNBA

Many Americans have protested about this gap between men and women. Especially since Caitlin Clark has set records and helped reach new heights in terms of viewing women’s basketball: the final between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the South Carolina Gamecocks set an audience record by bringing together 24 million viewers.

Even Joe Biden reacted on X on Tuesday. “Women in sport continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women aren’t getting their fair share.”he wrote. “It’s time we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women get the pay they deserve.”added the Democratic president.

“Caitlin Clark is expected to earn half a million dollars or more from WNBA revenue next season, on top of which she will have partnerships that already exceed 3 million euros”, the women’s league justified itself to CBS. The WNBA also hopes to see its TV revenues increase with the new player who attracts all eyes. But there would still be a giant leap between the salaries of women and men.
