It went on until well after midnight on Wednesday evening in the Porsche Arena, with three three-set matches during the day throwing the schedule into disarray.

Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa also wanted to know, but at the end of what had been a hard-fought game, Badosa gave up prematurely. The score here was 7:6, 4:6, 3:3. The Spaniard, who had been injured so often recently, had to undergo treatment at the end of the second set and ended up dropping out of the game because of problems with her left thigh.

And in the end she was distraught when she threw her arms around her best tour friend Sabalenka.

Sabalenka on Badosa: “I love her”

Sabalenka tried her best to console Badosa and was herself attacked afterwards. “I could cry right now,” she said on the court. “I feel for her so much. I just love this girl.” She doesn’t have any emotions right now, “I’m not happy, I’m not sad, I just want to say thank you to all the people who stayed until the end.”

She hopes that Badosa will be fit again for her home game in Madrid. “I’m so grateful to have a friend like Paula.”

Sabalenka, a three-time finalist in Stuttgart (2021, 2022, 2023), wants to finally win her first title at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix this year. She will face the winner of the game between Marketa Vondrousova and Anastasia Potapova on Friday.
