French Duo Makes History at European Badminton Championships

European Badminton Championships.

Breton Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue won the mixed doubles title at the European Championships in Saarbrücken (Germany). They dominated the Danish pair Mathias Christiansen – Alexandra Bøje with a score of 21-16, 21-15. A clear victory which gives them their greatest title. They are the first Blues to win a European title. Last year, Gicquel and Delrue won the silver medal at the European Games.

“The mega love”

“We are extremely proud to finally have this title close to us,” said Delphine Delrue after the meeting. We had a great match I think because our opponents were very difficult to play against. I think we were more serene than them. We are very proud to bring back the first title for France in the senior Europe. »

“Our ups and downs have made us resilient,” reacted Thom Gicquel. It’s been a difficult year. We knew we had to fight from the start to the end of the competition. We had no easy matches. This gold medal is mega fun. I’m super happy. »

Popov achieves the feat against Viktor Axelsen

In the men’s singles, Provençal Toma Junior Popov defeated Danish legend Viktor Axelsen, reigning Olympic champion and former world number 1, in the semi-finals (21-19, 17-21, 21-9). He will challenge another Dane in the final: Anders Antonsen. With this great victory, Toma Junor Popov obtained his place for the Olympic Games, to the detriment of his brother Christo, eliminated in the first round of the Euro.
