French Badminton Shines at European Championships: Securing Olympic Qualification for Paris 2024

The European Championships, the last major deadline in the race for Olympic qualification for Paris 2024, ended on Sunday in Saarbrücken (Germany).

Gold and silver, French badminton has achieved a great harvest in Germany. In search of precious metals, the Blues have above all been full of confidence in the run-up to the Paris Games. Especially in doubles. Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue have finally become European champions. For their third consecutive final after that of the European Championships in 2022 and the European Games in 2023, the French climbed to the highest step of the podium after their victory over the pair Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje (n°10) 21/16 21/15. A success that the French built with patience and serenity. A notch above their opponents, they played a successful match from the first to the last point.

Doubles finally rewarded

Another golden double: that made up of Anne Tran and Margot Lambert. They had announced it, they were coming to Germany for the title. They kept their word and are the new European champions. In the final, they beat the Stoeva sisters. If the triple title holders imposed their style of play in the first set, the French won the tactical battle in the next two. More mobile, they forced their opponents to move. Destabilized, the Bulgarians made more mistakes and the Tricolores regained control of the match. In the last decisive set, Anne Tran and Margot Lambert were a step above and left no chance for the sisters who suffered a fatal 10/3.

Finally, in singles, Toma Junior Popov changes metal. After three bronze medals, including one at the European Games in 2023, the Frenchman moved on to silver. For their 9th confrontation, the Fosséen still cannot defeat Anders Antonsen. He lost in the final 18/21 13/21. Tired physically and mentally, after his victory yesterday against Axelsen, the Frenchman lacked the lucidity to worry the fairer and more incisive Dane. With this second place, the eldest of the siblings made sure to get back in front of his younger brother – Christo – in the “Race to Paris”.
