Viaplay will continue to broadcast Formula 1 in the Netherlands in the coming years. The streaming service has extended the contract, which expired after this season. Insiders report this to the NOS.

Viaplay has owned the Dutch broadcasting rights of Formula 1 since 2022. The Swedish company pays approximately 30 million euros per year for this. For the new deal, Viaplay would have to spend a lot more money and reportedly pay around 45 million euros per year. It is unknown how long the rights will remain with Viaplay.

Ziggo had the highest bid

According to insiders, Ziggo initially submitted the highest bid to Formula 1 for the rights. The company broadcast Formula 1 for years until 2022 and now did everything (in vain) to get the rights back.

Ziggo hoped to attract more customers and advertisers with the rights. Regular Formula 1 faces Olav Mol and Jack Plooij should then return to the circuit. However, despite the higher offer, Formula 1 was more interested in continuing the contract with Viaplay.

Viaplay and Ziggo did not want to comment on the news when asked.

The problems Viaplay

The acquisition of the rights by Viaplay is striking. The company is facing financial and strategic problems. It is struggling with expensive sports rights, inflation and energy costs and declining subscriptions.

Last year, Viaplay announced it would withdraw from a number of countries. A number of productions have also been stopped and the workforce was reduced by 30 percent last year. The company also said there was talk about selling operations.

In addition to Formula 1, Viaplay also has the broadcasting rights in the Netherlands of football matches from the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga.
