Former MLB Player Yuniesky Betancourt Arrested on Insurance Fraud Charges in Miami-Dade County

A former Major League Baseball player was identified as one of four individuals arrested on insurance fraud charges in County Miami-Dade.

Yuniesky Betancourt42 years old and born in Cubaenjoyed a nine-season MLB career, playing shortstop for the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers.

His last major league season was in 2013, and he subsequently completed his professional career in Japan in 2014.

Court records indicate he appeared in Miami-Dade court on Friday.

Throughout his career in the Major Leagues, according to Baseball Reference, Betancourt accumulated earnings of more than $15.7 million.

However, the alleged scam he was involved in involved a payment of $61,000.

Along with three other people, Betancourt faces accusations of planning a car accident for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent insurance claims, a practice unfortunately common in South Florida.

The other suspects involved are Maura Pérez, Nancy Mercedes Peña and Abel Vera, all accused of defrauding Kemper, a Chicago-based insurance company.

The charges filed against the four individuals include felonies related to filing false insurance claims, conspiracy to defraud, arranging an accident, and grand theft in the third degree.

Betancourt is being represented by the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, according to court records. He was released from jail after posting $4,500 bail on Saturday, according to the same records.
