Former High School Baseball Player Arrested for Stealing High-End Baseball Gloves- Akihabara Theft Investigation

Two men who were arrested on suspicion of stealing a Yu-Gi-Oh! card worth approximately 5 million yen in Akihabara, Tokyo, are suspected of stealing high-end baseball gloves from multiple baseball specialty stores, investigators have learned. I learned this through an interview. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Investigation Division 3 suspects that one of the men was a former high school baseball player, and that he misused his knowledge.

◆In the shadow of the sales floor with a suitcase in hand

The suspects arrested are Sora Takashino, 22, unemployed and of no fixed address, and Kanta Sanmi, 22, unemployed and from Toshima Ward, Tokyo. Suspect Mitsumi played on the baseball team of a powerful high school that produced professional baseball players. The two suspects reportedly met through work around December last year.

According to investigators, both suspects are suspected of visiting baseball equipment specialty stores in Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture posing as customers and shoplifting gloves. No stolen items have been found by anyone involved, and it is believed that the items have already been resold for living expenses and entertainment expenses.

The two suspects are said to have stolen six gloves (totaling approximately 500,000 yen) from “Super Baseball Specialty Store CV” in Kamagaya City, Chiba Prefecture. This is a famous store with around 1,600 gloves lined up inside.

◆“Do you understand how difficult retail stores are?”

According to the store, on January 28th, a young man came into the store with a suitcase in his hand. A security camera showed him looking around while holding the glove, then putting it away in a suitcase in the shadows. All of the stolen machines were hard-drive models, and were high-end models priced at more than 50,000 yen, aimed mainly at left-handed users.

CV representative Yuta Nakamura (37) reported the damage on social networking sites (SNS) and appealed to people not to commit similar acts. In an interview with this newspaper, he said, “Does the culprit understand how difficult it is for a retail store to make a profit of 500,000 yen?I want him to apologize and pay the price.” (Yudai Suzuka)
