In the final spurt of the Bundesliga season, it’s all about the international places. The first decision has been made. The semi-finals in the DFB Cup could also have an impact. Ideally, there would be a historical constellation.

Bayer Leverkusen, as the Bundesliga leaders, was the first team to qualify early for next season’s Champions League. In addition to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, the Rhinelanders are also represented in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup – and can therefore influence the distribution of European Cup places for German clubs.

WELT summarizes the starting position before the cup semi-finals of Leverkusen against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Wednesday and 1. FC Saarbrücken against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Tuesday.

The DFB Cup winner qualifies for the Europa League. This would be the case if either the second division teams Düsseldorf and Kaiserslautern or the third division team Saarbrücken win the cup. Should Leverkusen win the cup for the first time since 1993, their place in the second highest European Cup would be awarded via the Bundesliga – currently sixth in the table. The final loser goes away empty-handed.

The distribution of the European Cup places normally looks like this: The top four in the Bundesliga qualify for the Champions League, the fifth place in the table and the DFB Cup winner for the Europa League, the sixth in the table for the Conference League. However, that can still change.

Historical constellation possible

From next season there will be 36 instead of 32 participants in the Champions League, two of the four new places will be awarded to the two nations with the best performance in this season’s international competitions. In the European Football Union Uefa’s ranking of countries with the best annual coefficient for the current season, Germany (16,357 points) is currently in second place.

This would bring a fifth place in the Champions League above the Bundesliga table, eight German teams would be there internationally. However, pursuers England (16,250) still have five clubs in the European competitions, Germany only three. Leader Italy (17,714) already has a clear lead. The Europa League winner receives a place in the Champions League. However, since Leverkusen has already qualified for the premier class through the league, there would be no additional place for German teams even if the Werkself were to triumph in Europe.

The Champions League winner will also be in the premier class next season. If FC Bayern or Borussia Dortmund do not make it through the Bundesliga to the Champions League as title winners, there would be an additional Champions League place for Germany. Then even six German starters would be possible in the premier class.
