Football: what is the semi-automatic offside soon to be used in the Premier League?

The Premier League announced this Thursday that its clubs have unanimously accepted this new tool which should allow supporters to better understand offside.

In a press release, the English championship explains that this new technology “will enable faster and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high quality broadcast graphics”.

Already tested during the World Cup in Qatar or in the Champions League, this system uses numerous cameras which follow the players and the ball. Thanks to what they observe, they must then allow the creation of a virtual offside line to determine whether or not there is indeed offside.

Still with the aim of better understanding, a synthetic image must be broadcast to the public and viewers so that they better understand why a goal was canceled for an offside position.

In its press release, the Premier League specifies that the semi-automatic offside system will come into force not from the start of the season but “after one of the autumn international breaks”.

It remains to be seen what the precise provisions of the system that the English championship will use will be. How many cameras will be used? Will a chip be placed in the ball like it was during the last World Cup? Answers will have to be provided in the coming months.
