Football: Darmstadt 98 is relegated from the Bundesliga

SV Darmstadt 98 is the first relegated team of the Bundesliga season. The bottom of the table lost 0-1 (0-0) against 1. FC Heidenheim in the evening and can no longer reach relegation place in the remaining three games of the season.

The decisive goal for Heidenheim came late in added time by Nikola Dovedan (90th + 1). Darmstadt showed a fighting spirit, but in the end it wasn’t enough to win a point.

Darmstadt 98’s relegation had become apparent in recent months. Darmstadt was unable to keep up with the league competition throughout the entire season. A few weeks ago, coach Torsten Lieberknecht basically wrote off staying in the league and dismissed it as a “big miracle”. SV Darmstadt 98 was only able to collect 18 points after 31 match days; the team only ended a 22-game streak without a win the previous week with a win against Cologne.

Three games to say goodbye

Nevertheless, the Darmstadt team’s new sporting director, Paul Fernie, made it clear before the game that, from the club’s perspective, Torsten Lieberknecht should remain coach in the 2nd league. “There are no question marks from me at all when it comes to Torsten at the moment. We have built up a relationship on equal terms relatively quickly. We talk often and the conversations so far have only been positive. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him,” said Fernie .

The remaining games will be a farewell tour for Darmstadt, where maximum damage limitation is possible. There is a game at VfL Wolfsburg on May 4th. After that, the games against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and finally at Borussia Dortmund are on the agenda.

It is the fourth relegation from the first Bundesliga in the club’s history: Darmstadt was previously relegated from the Bundesliga in 1979, 1982 and 2017. It was only last season that the last promotion to the top German league was achieved.
